DECEMBER WINE CLUB FEATURES

Premium Wine Club- $30/month including tax
Domaine de Courbissac Roc Suzadou, Minervois W. Languedoc, France, 2014 (MSRP $45/bt)

Brunnehilde Claux took over the Domaine de  Courbissac at the end of 2013 , and at the beginning worked the 19ha of the Estate alone with a worker. She tells us about "the magic of the first moments, the madness or we are able to do everything."  Together, they cleared the vineyards, weeded and cleared the vineyards of Cesseras, north-east of Carcassonne, Minervois. The  Minervois is an AOC Languedoc , straddling the Aude and Herault. Leaning against the Black Mountain, its slopes facing south at an altitude of 50 to 500m, dominate a plain of low altitude. The rivers which descend from the Black Mountain have deposited on their banks terraces of pebbles, sandstones, schists or limestones. And precisely, Brunnhilde tells us "his vignoble that resonates when we walk on it, so there are pebbles ...."

All the grape harvests are hand-made, in a traditional way in the  pure respect of the plant , with a rigorous sorting for the "first crus and grand cru", which keeps only  the most ripe, the most just and the most more tasty . Drawing on his experience of several years  at Gauby  and in Priorat in Spain, Brunnhilde practices two winemaking methods; part of the production is destemmed, the fermentation is done in the juice, in contact with the air, the other part is treated in whole bunches, which allows an  intracellular fermentation inside the grape, in anaerobic (without air) . This is the absolute respect of the fruit.

93 Wine Advocate- "One of the top Minervois in the vintage, the 2014 Minervois Roc Suzadou comes from 70- to 90-year-old vines and is a blend of 50% Grenache and 50% Carignan that was raised all in foudre. It offers fabulous Grenache character in its kirsch, plums, dried flowers, and lavender aromas and flavors. This full-bodied, sexy, luxuriously textured beauty has a great mid-palate, notable purity and a great finish. It will drink nicely for 5–7 years.”

Pairs beautifully with BBQ or grilled pork chops, red meats, Beef Bourguignon or Beef stew.

CHOICE RED CLUB- $15/month including tax

This Beaujolais wine from the St Amour appellation of Jean-François Trichard is made from Gamay grapes planted on plots with a crystalline soil. Traditional Beaujolais winemaking. On the nose, this St Amour wine  reveals a typical bouquet of red fruits, peony and stone fruits. A 2014 Beaujolais wine with a fresh and tasty texture with melted tannins. Pairs well with roasted wild game, red meat dishes, and mature cheeses.

PROPRIETOR CLUB- $80/month including tax
Jonata La Sangre La Jonata, Ballard Canyon, Syrah, 2013 (MSRP $140/bt)

Vineyard Details:

Jonata Vineyards is owned by same owners as Screaming Eagle!

Jonata is 600 acres of gorgeous, golden hills: eighty of which were meticulously selected based on their unique microclimates and soild profiles, then divided into more than fifty blocks and sub-blocks - each matched with different rootstocks, clones and planting densities - to provide winemaker, Matt Dees, with the broadest palette from which to blend the distinctive wines of Jonata.  Ranging from cool and foggy in the west to warm and dry in the east, The Santa Ynez Valley is one of California’s most climatically diverse growing areas. The most expansive AVA within the larger Santa Barbara County region, Santa Ynez is also home to a wide variety of soil types and geographical features. To avoid an identity crisis, the appellation is further divided into four distinct sub-AVAs—Sta. Rita Hills, Ballard Canyon, Los Olivos District, and Happy Canyon—each with its own defining characteristics.  As one might expect from such a vast and varied region, a wide selection of grapes is planted here—more than sixty different varieties and counting. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir dominate in the chilly west, while Zinfandel, Rhône blends, and Bordeaux blends rule the arid east. Syrah is successful at both ends of the valley, with a lean and peppery Old-World sensibility closer to the coast and lush berry fruit further inland.

Tasting Notes
Still tight and closed, which is a great sign for a young Sangre with such a long life ahead. Scents of black plum, black pepper and soy sauce. Savory notes combine with lifted black fruit. Shows its power on the attack with superbly sweet mulberry fruit. Dense and chewy like all of the 2013 reds. Tightly wound with ultra fine tannin wrapped around a savory core of dried mushroom and clove.

Perfect Pairings
Cool-climate Syrah, with its peppery spices, is a natural match with flavorful Moroccan-spiced lamb dishes, where the spice is more about flavor than heat. With Australian Shiraz, grown in warmer regions, heavy meat dishes with abundant protein and fat are a necessity to match the intensity of the wine.

"Cofermented with 2% Viognier, the Syrah-dominated 2013 La Sangre de Jonata is another terrific 2013 from winemaker Matt Dees that checks in near the top of the vintage. Full-bodied, concentrated and with bright acidity, it reveals classic notes of black fruits, pepper, violets, spring flowers and tons of minerality. It will be better in another 2-3 years and keep for decade or more after that." 96pts Robert Parker

Aquinas Pinot Noir, Napa and Sonoma Counties, California
Aquinas Pinot Noir is an intensely aromatic wine displaying notes of sweet cherry, Tahitian vanilla crème brulee and raspberry compote. It has a remarkably rich fruit flavor of sweet cranberry and pomegranate, both nuances of Napa, along with sour cherry and a pleasant earthiness which are contributions from the Sonoma Coast. The addition of Petite Sirah gives mid-palate weight to this bright, medium-bodied wine.

Acquinas Cabernet, Napa and Sonoma Counties, California
Aquinas Cabernet Sauvignon is filled with aromas of dried cherry, cocoa nibs and black currant along with toasted coconut notes from 16 months of American oak aging. Blackberry, tart cherry, gingerbread and cappuccino flavors lead to a velvety mid-palate. This full-bodied, well-balanced North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon culminates with a long, expressive finish.
